Indian Agriculture Industry

  The Indian Agriculture sector is the largest sector in the Indian economy contributing 25% to the GDP of the country as well as accounting for 13 % of India's exports.
 
In the initial years in India, agriculture activity was limited to the production food grains and few cash crops such as cotton, sugarcane and jute, but recent years has been a remarkable shift in the agriculture scene, including increasing diversity in a range of products and greater sophistication with the creation of
critical infrastructure like cold storage, refrigerated transportation, packaging, quality control etc. The Indian agriculture sector is now set for a leap with the introduction of new technology like IT, Bio technology, advance agriculture practices.

India has made fairly good practices on the Horticulture Map of the world with a total annual production of the horticulture crops touching over 149 Million tones. India has bestowed with wide range of climate and physio-geographical conditions and such as most suitable for various kinds of horticulture crops.
India's potential to become a leading player in the agriculture sector is proved by the fact that it already has makings of one.  
     
  - India is the largest producer of vegetable, fruits, pulses, cashew nut, coconuts, cotton, sugarcane, tea and assortment of spices in the world.
  - Second largest producer of rice & wheat & fourth largest in producing grains.More than 600 million farmers are in India (in fact, every fourth farmer in the world is an Indian).
  - Indian farmers can grow variety of vegetables & fruits throughout the year.
  - World's largest milk producing country ( 99 million tons per annum in 06-07),15% of the total milk production in the world.
  - In-milk bovine population in the year 2003 was 8.2 million cross bread cows, 27.6 million Indigenous cows and 33 million buffaloes.
  - Market for veterinary products & feed additives is Rs. 12,000 crores.
  - Dairy plants handle 45 million liters per day.
  - India is one of the top six egg producing and the top five chicken producing countries
